1. Department of Defense Directive 1215.6, 16 Jan 65, Subject: Uniform
Training Categories and Pay Groups Within the Reserve Forces, directs

certain changes in the Reserve program, The purpose of this letter is to
inform you of these changes and of your status in the Air Force Reserve.

2, Except for two categories of personnel, a Reservist cannot be assigned
to an active status of the Standby (NARS) and participate in any Reserve
training and accrue points toward retention and retirement with pay at age
60, The two categories of personnel who may participate in a Standby
Reserve status are:

a, Reservists obligated under the Universal Military Training and
Service Act who have been assigned to Standby Status.

b. Reservists who have accrued 18 years but less than 20 satisfactory
years towards retirement with pay at age 60, under Section 1331, Title 10,
U. S. Code.

3. When an obligated Reservist, as outlined in paragraph 2a above, reaches
the end of his obligation, he must be assigned from NARS or be discharged
if enlisted. Reference 2b above, when a Reservist has completed 20 satis-
factory years for retirement with pay, he must be reassigned from NARS,

4. Those Reservists who do not meet the two categories described in the
preceding paragraph may, if otherwise eligible, apply for Ready Reserve
status as follows:

a. Category "A" AFRes units or MOARS Part I positions.
b. ANG units,
c. Ready Reinforcement Personnel Section (RRPS).

Those personnel desiring assignment to the RRPS must request such assign-
ment and complete an AF Form 1051, Ready Reserve Agreement, and forward it
to this Center, ATTN: RPCS-1. All administrative controls are exercised
by ARRC as commander of this section, Participation in this Reserve Section
is by ECI courses, Training Att. ents with the CAP, or Regular unite,
Personnel assigned to this Section receive no pay nor do they qualify for

5, Locating # vacant position in a Category "A" unit

MARS Part I position is a responsibility of the individ’ nc oo”

Reservist for the vacant position may be submitted direct to ARNO for teeu=
ance of reassignment orders,

6. The following actions will be taken by this Center:

4, Personnel who have 18 but less than 19 good years towards retire-
ment may be retained in NARS and participate as previously authorized but
no longer than three years from the last retention/retirement year.

b, Those persons with 19 but less than 20 satisfactory years towards
retirement may be retained in NARS and participate as previously authorized
but no longer than two years from the last retention/retirement year,

c. Obligated Reservists assigned to NARS may stay assigned to NARS
until the end of their obligations, However, if the reason for Standby
Status changes, other action may become necessary.

\d. Reservists not eligible for retention in NARS may be assigned to
the Ready Reserve in accordance with para 4 if they volunteer or they will
be assigned to ISLRS by the end of the retention/retirement year or on
1 July 1965, whichever comes first.

7. If assigned to the Inactive Status List Reserve Section (ISLRS) for
failure to obtain a Ready position, the action will not count as being
assigned to ISLRS one time, However, it will cause deletion from any
promotion list an officer may be on, It will also cause a break in the
retention/retirement year. Further, Reservists may not stay assigned to
ISLRS for an indefinite period. They are subject to periodic screening in
accordance with Chapter 50, paragraph 2, AFM 35-3.

8. Based on paragraph 2 of this letter and our records, your category is
indicated below. If you disagree, you should write this Center, ATIN:
RPCS-1, You must reply by returning the enclosed card within 30 calendar ,
days of receipt of this letter,
