The Documents
A hundred and forty-two orders, certificates and letters from his 201 file, September 1941 to November 1981 — scanned, dated and browsable.
Every sheet that survives from Jack Cline’s personnel file, in the order it was issued, from a transfer between companies at Camp Claiborne in 1941 to a last sheet in 1981. Most are mimeographed extracts of special orders, the routine paperwork of moving one man through a war and then through thirty years of reserve service: a rating as pilot, a crew and an aircraft, a promotion, a certificate of fifty-one missions, a separation as a major in January 1947, and finally retirement as a lieutenant colonel on his sixtieth birthday.
Each page here is the scan itself. Below every document is a machine transcription — rough, since these are carbon copies and mimeographs — kept mainly so that names and place names can be searched. Where a document has been read closely, there is a note saying what it is and why it matters; the rest are listed by what their file names record.
